Now a year later there’s news again! Citrix reports on the new client strategy in a blog post on the Citrix Community blog. The new client strategy is going to be named “Citrix Receiver”. Citrix Receiver is sort of a framework client in which plug-ins can be inserted for the different Citrix products. As of now they only speak about plug-ins for XenApp and XenDesktop but there probably will be plug-ins for other Citrix products like Access Gateway and Password Manager also.
I have to say I’m very happy Citrix finally brought some fresh info on this new client initiative. Installing and updating Citrix clients in the current client infrastructure is hell of a job. In the new scenario only the Citrix Receiver client has to be pre-installed on the users workstation. Product plug-ins are centrally managed and will be automatically installed and updated on the users workstations when needed. In addition to simplified management another advantage is that client features will be modularized. In other words the current clients will be cutted in little pieces, this allows Citrix to be more flexible in releasing changes and enhancements for the client.
Back in 2007 when Citrix first announced the new client the release date would be somewhere in the second half of 2008. Now one year later a new release date is set. The Citrix Receiver client will be released as of late Q1 2009. The componentized plug-ins will not be available before the second half of this year, so I’m not really sure what we will get in late Q1.
